ironman held it down like steel.

ironman has a unibrow?

i just came back from seeing iron man tonight, and i have to say that i was not at all disappointed. robert downey jr. managed to stay sober long enough to whip the ass of more than a few afghani terrorists, as well as a few members of the military industrial complex (can’t be mad at that). the action took a little while to get going, but once the ironman outfit was put together the flick took off from there. even gwyneth paltrow (who i have wanted to punch in the womb for years) came off pretty fresh.

there are a couple of criticisms that i feel compelled to point out. first – i did NOT enjoy jeff bridges playing the role of the bad guy. it is true that he had a beard… and as a rule any person with a beard or a british accent in an action movie must automatically be the villain. still, it was very unsettling for the viewer to be put at odds with lebowski (aka “the dude”, or “el duderino”… if you’re not into the whole brevity thing).

my other problem with this movie is the fact that ghostface killah was slighted by the director. john favreau (the pussy whipped dude from swingers) directed ironman, and he made the call to edit out ghostface’s scene from the final picture. thats shitty, because the description sounded amusing. per ghostface:

“It was a good look for the kid because Robert Downey Jr. recognized me as soon as I seen him. He was like, ‘Yo, Tony!’ … For him to recognize me, I was kinda surprised by that. I didn’t know he even knew about the kid. … We called each other Tony onscreen. I’m like, ‘Tony Stark, I got your jet, I didn’t mess it up.’ He was like, ‘I got the Bentley for you, I laced it up.’ I had two girls with me, I was like, ‘That’s you [pointing toward the girls].’ I sent two birds at him. It was a wrap for that scene. He’s a cool dude and funny. Big up to Robert Downey Jr.” LINK

as fresh as a ghostface cameo would have been, i still felt like hip hop’s ironman made off with some nice buzz from the flick. during a scene on tony starks’ jet, a new ghostface song/video is playing in the background. from what i could tell (the scene was brief) that music was hot. cash and valuable prizes will be your reward if you can hook me up with a copy of the song “slept on tony with dirt.” i can’t even find a spot on the internet where it can be heard, much less purchased or downloaded.

criticisms aside, it was a pretty good picture. if the hulk or batman movies this summer are just as good, then comic book screen adaptations will truly be in their golden age (such as that is). one last note… if you do fork over the $10 to see ironman, be sure to sit through the entire credits at the end. there is an additional 30 seconds of movie the filmmakers easter-egged that you will not want to miss. spoilery hint: prepare to see a famous black dude w/ an eye patch… no, it’s not slick rick.
