doctor house, and varying degrees of douchebaggery.

what the eff are you lookin’ at?

because i’m *that* bored, i have recently completed watching every episode of the tv series “house.”

i had always seen the ads for house – usually on promo ads during football games – and thought that this show must be annoying as hell. another doctor show? this one predicated on the idea that the main doctor is a raging asshole… who would enjoy watching this?

then it dawned on me that i too can be a raging asshole (shocking, i know). my main reason for not tuning into the show was how pithy and sarcastically bitter the main character was portrayed. also, i was worried i’d recognize many of my own character traits in house himself – and the fact that madison avenue is mocking my character type was a bit unsettling.

vsadwell, having watched all 4 seasons thus far, i can righteously claim that i am no gregory house. that degree of douchebaggery has escaped me. perhaps there truly is hope for a jerk trying to reform himself? i’ll let you know if it happens. meanwhile, even after scoping out the whole series i’m still not sure that i’m sold on this show.

if you care to avoid spoilers, turn away from this post now.

the fact that the writers make it seem like house is trying to seek redemption on some level for his being a prick kind of ruins the stories for me. i say: let him be a jerk, and let the rest of the cast be forced to contend with him knowing that he is intractably asshole-ish. instead, the writers have opted for a slow metamorphosis in which house realizes that being a dickfaced jerk really isn’t the best way to go through life – and woe is he for having squandered these potential relationships with friends and colleagues.

vfadsi suppose they’re grasping for realism, because no person this douchey in the world could hope to sustain that status for so long without it coming back on him. at least in the medical profession, anyway. i should think you’d exposed to a too many responsible adults to get away with that baby bullshit for too long. and despite “how much they have in common,” nobody would stick by their asshole mentor as long as omar epps (dr. foreman) has stood by house. not without inflicting bodily harm, anyway.

that flaw being stated, i have still set the dvr to record the next live airing of the show. i know, i know… just call me a sucker for continuing dramas (read: novelas). whether or not my interest in house will wax or wane i cannot say, but at the end of the day i have enjoyed seeing a venom-tongued “cripple” portrayed someplace other than my bedroom mirror.

i love that show! but then again i always love medical shows because secretly, i wish i was a physician. also because they romanticize the idea of becoming an MD.

i can’t believe you said that.

this is odd. i have always thought that you looked like you should be a doctor. swear to god. since the first time i met you, you seemed like a chick fresh out of med school doing an internship at a hospital. is it weird that this is the vibe you give off?

hahahaha i guess it is kinda weird but you’re not the only one who’s said it. this one dude at my old job cut his hand deep and no lie, comes RUNNING into my office all bloody with a first aid kit and drops it on my desk like “Z YOU LOOK LIKE YOU CAN FIX THIS!”.
    LOL

Also- the amount of douchebaggery that is socially acceptable when delivered by someone speaking in an AMERICAN accent is substantially lower than that which is delivered with an ENGLISH accent.

So- my thought….by nature the Actor know as House is a douchebag by nature. However, when portrayed with an American accent…..we just think he’s assy….as such we *heart* House….

i think that any doctor who treats his patient like that should be shot! To top it off he’s an addict. Ask yourself would you like a doctor like that to tell you, you’re a loser or treat you like crap..I’m surprise that one of his patient has not showed up yet to take a shot him…

I’n not watching this garbage anymor.

I went back in forth regarding my opinion of Dr. House. At first, I thought he was completely detestable. Upon closer analysis (and watching more episodes), I came to believe that he was a very complex yet mostly ethical and even an extremely sensitive individual who had been deeply wounded and was bitter. I thought he might actually care about others yet be too afraid to connect. I thought he might be brilliant. I finally came to my senses. House is a prick. He isn’t even that intelligent either. Sure, he has a lot of knowledge (and not just about medicine), but given the fact that his diagnosis is usually wrong (at least initially), there must be some problems with his powers of deduction. Also, he has practically no wisdom, and he is too quick to make up his mind based on questionable evidence (I am referring to his habit of trying to ‘peg’ others, figure them out, etc). He oversimplifies people and their motives to the degree that he misunderstands them while using questionable things such as the type of closet they wear to an interview to assess their character, yet he is too foolish to realize it. He is unfit to teach anyone about ethics (or even medicine).

I agree that nobody could get away with the crap he pulls in the real world. I don’t care how brilliant you are or how often you are right. If his flunkies were residents, he might get away with it until they transferred to another program, but I doubt ready to practice solo professionals would endure his abuse. No administrator would pass up 100 million dollars for him either, and no doctor in his right mind (or even a nut like Wilson) would jeopardize his own license to prescribe House drugs. Unfortunately, many patients may put up with him temporarily or hold their tongue because they might fear retaliation from pissing him off, but many more would not tolerate him even for a moment. I know I’d certainly request a different doctor if I was his patient. The patient response to him in the show just isn’t realistic. He might be able to treat a “nobody” like myself like crap, but the rich or educated people he has screwed with on the show would not just take it like they do. In his defense, House usually does ultimately get it right (but only after making many mistakes – in the real world these mistakes would probably have greater consequences). He gets the diagnosis wrong most of the time (at least initially). He basically operates by trial and error (I’m not a medical professional, but I see a problem with this). He does illegal things (like treating patients against their will) and unethical things (like trying to commit a patient just so he can do whatever treatment he wants that the patient has refused). In the real world, he would have been fired, sued, and had his arrogant ass kicked nearly ever episode. His arrogance is a tragic joke to me. Nobody can know everything in today’s world. Knowledge changes so quickly that even the greatest of geniuses cannot keep up. What you know today will be discredited by new research tomorrow, so anybody who prides themselves in knowledge of facts alone (or uses such knowledge as justification to get away with being a jerk or know-it-all) is standing on a pile of sand.

I loved it when that cop gave House a taste of his own medicine (I didn’t see all the episodes related to it but I loved seeing him rot in jail). I haven’t watched all the episodes (not the recent ones). I hope he really does change of the better. As things stand since I saw the show last (about a year ago), he was a terrible role model for medical students and young doctors.

Also, he should be grateful that an attractive age appropriate woman like Cuddy is attracted to him. He’s a really idiot to not treat her with more respect. He appetite for prostitutes is disgusting, but with his personality, I just it’s for the best (it spares nice women from having to deal with him).
