the end of the wire.

es
last call.

the wire series finale is next week.

if you haven’t seen episode 9, you’re slacking. please step your game up… there are spoilers afoot. for everyone else – some thoughts to consider for the episode to end all wires. i’m sad to see this series go. there really hasn’t been anything like it on television before. peace to everyone involved for providing riveting entertainment that never once insulted the viewer’s intelligence.

and now, some thoughts leading up to the last episode…

podas— i predict that mcnulty will end up dead before the finale is complete. harsh? perhaps… but consider the foreshadowing that has been going on. a few episodes hence, beadie mentioned jimmy’s death, and how nobody at the funeral would really care about him except for his non-existent family.

the untimely death of detective coles (heart attack on the treadmill) also lent itself to association with mcnulty. all the stress surrounding the bullshit homeless serial killer is about to blow up in his face. it seems plausible that jimmy will follow suit.

however, the most solid piece of foreshadowing has taken place over the course of the entire series. whenever a police officer dies, the entire baltimore PD can be found at the cop bar singing and eulogizing over the body. inevitably “bunk” will make his way outside and puke in the street right after fat-ass jay landsman makes a speech. this sequence has occurred on 3 separate occasions. i’m willing to bet that the series itself will end at that bar for the celebration of james mcnulty’s demise.

wrds— sadly, i think that the dim-witted “cheese” (a.k.a. method man) will be the new kingpin to inherit marlo stansfield’s throne. with bunk making such a tight case against chris partlow, there is no way he doesn’t do serious time. marlo showed a chink in the armor by wilding out about omar dragging his name through the dirt. this serves as a clue that mr. stansfield will fall sooner rather than later. the only man with some rank left? to quote lester freamon: “the cheese stands alone.” i can’t imagine that will stand for very long.

— despite some contrary opinions, i can’t be mad at detective greggs for ratting out mcnulty and freamon regarding the homeless serial killer scandal. viewers had to know that she possessed more morals than her peers in the baltimore police department. back in season 1 (when she was daniels’ protégé) greggs didn’t pick wee-bay out of the line-up despite the fact he shot her. why? she couldn’t righteously identify the shooter.

qvhshe’s just that type – the rare honest cop. did those morals apply to her home life? not so much. but as a cop she has always lived by a code. the thing about having morals is that they don’t mean a thing unless you’re willing to stand by them when they’re inconvenient. otherwise, you’re just talking shit.

i can’t be mad at her character. it was a fucked up decision, and it has foul consequences… but thats the whole point, i think. if you’re a shithead lying ass cop you fuck up the job, and if you’re an honest cop you fuck up the job too. either way you can’t win.
