january_08.
just chit-chatter.
how many of these songs will i even remember by the time we’re ready for a “favorite songs of 2008” list? which reminds me… i never did get around to posting up my favorites of ‘07. i should probably do something about that. but for now, chew on these tracks that i’ve had in my headphones for most of the month:
mc lyte – paper thin (mf doom blend)
while enjoying this fun little blend of a classic lyte verse with a doom beat, it occurs to me that after all these years she’s still my favorite female MC.
johnson & jonson – wow
took a chance on this album because of blu & exile’s fresh 2007 contribution, and it paid off with this song.
ming + fs – bump
find out where these cats snatched up the vocal sample for this song and i will be your slave for life. ok, not really.
apathy – the 80s
i’m hoping cats like apathy will help nip the hipster 80s retro trend in the bud.
atmosphere – mattress
i never could understand why dial-a-mattress would want you to leave OFF the last “s” for savings in their phone number.
paris, tokyo – lupe fiasco
for someone who doesn’t particularly like tribe’s music, a lot of lupe’s recent songs have a native tongues vibe to them.
emc – we alright ft. strickie love
while i like the idea of hip-hop supergroups, these cats didn’t really pull that off with the exception of a couple of songs like this one.
mighty joseph – blurr
can you imagine what karniege and vast could do with some better production?
j-zone – candy razors ft. huggy bear & risin’ sons
every once in a while i have to don my tin-foil hat and revel in my rap nerd ways.
diverse – jus biz
prefuse 73’s production style is as simple, understated, and infectious as ever.
favorite lyric in this mix:
the government’s your enemy. its drug dependency. its a guilty plea fee. its the bilderberg committee. international currency with bar codes replacing paper money. its the metallic strip on your driver’s license. genetic science – here to crush rebel defiance. planned racial riots. its control of the population. one world – no more nations. grow test creations. the eugenics debate, plans to make the perfect race. its aristocratic static. the mason outfit. heretics, global economics. its the book i read, the shotgun under my bed. another author turned up dead. its the slave trade, drug raid, assassination state.
–huggy bear, in “candy razors”
a note to the NSA agent that has to read this red-flagged post: ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY, motherfucker. please don’t send me to guantanamo bay.
please?

Huck’s Top 3 Female MCs of all time:
1. Lady of Rage. Listen to the first track on Doggystyle. Even if you could beat her in a battle, Baby D could still fuck you up.
2. MC Lyte. 10 % Dis is still classic.
3. All the rest.
huck: i agree, but no jean grae? i think she stands a bit apart from the rest of the crew…
j: can’t believe you’re giving lupe some shine. i’m so tired of that silly cat.
I don’t like Jean Grae. I never really saw the appeal of her or of Bahamadia
p – i’m still giving lupe some shine because of the lessons learned after hating on 2pac back in the day. because of his beef with big, i LOATHED pac… but at the end of the day the only person that lost out was me, because i missed all the things he had to say in his last years. by no means am i saying that lupe is pac, but the sentiment remains the same.
as for jean grae (and for that matter bahamadia)… she has the whole “verbal skill set” as far as MCs go. but thats really not enough to make me into a serious fan. shes like a female aesop rock. unbelievable talent, but no star power.
“its the metallic strip on your driver’s license. genetic science – here to crush rebel defiance”
I swear to god, they’ve been reading KC’s blogs….
kandi knows the deal.
I want.
