december_07.

santa always drops the hotness.
i have come to appreciate the fact that these mixtapes are my favorite part of writing this blog. i can’t say i even “write” that much anymore. this spot has quite simply become a venue for sharing some of the things i enjoy. that being said, if you haven’t downloaded any of these mixes thus far, i encourage you to do so.
not to blow my own horn (ayo!), but the fine people who take the time to click THIS LINK every month rarely seem to regret it.
later this month i’m planning to put together a mix that includes my favorite songs released this year - so this wont be the last “release” of 2007 by any means. but for right now, steal the music files i have selected for december and enjoy. happy holidays everyone.
******
jay-z - roc boys (and the winner is…)
the winner is HOV, apparently. everyone has heard (and presumably enjoyed) this song by now. still, it’s so fresh i couldn’t resist adding it to this month’s mix. thank you jay for helping everyone forget the train wreck that was “kingdom come.”
little brother - two step blues
i was a little disappointed by the new release (”get back“), but this track almost saved the entire record for me. this is one of those songs that is impossible not to tap your toes to.
ghostface - killa lipstick (ft. method man & masta killa)
speaking of disappointing records… what happened to ghostface? after releasing 2 classics in 2006, “the big doe rehab” was for the most part a let down. don’t get me wrong - ghost still does his thing, but the production was “eh.” this track is one of the few standouts (thanks to the isley brothers and meth on the hook).
prince ali - coordinate
is it odd that i have suddenly developed a taste for bay area hip-hop? no - i have not gone hyphy, by the way. still, i blame sunshine for this atrocity. front all i want - “curb side service” is a late edition to my list of favorite records of 2007.
mos def & mf doom - mr. spook
it would seem that i am incapable of making a monthly mix without including doom or mos. in an effort to multi-task, i’ve included a pretty fresh mash-up of ghostwhirl & mr. nigga that satisfies both requirements.
chaundon - push up
this song reminds me that despite the fact that i have ZERO game, i am in no way as creepy as the characters who spit lines like these at club chicks. good luck with that, chaun…
slim thug, t.i., & bun b - three kings (ratatat remix)
i’ve become a fan of ratatat’s production. by all means check out their website because the remixes (and original material) is fire. even the snobbiest of dirty south fans have to give props to THIS remix.
styles p - the hardest (ft. az)
now, i love new york hardcore, but this may be the most unfortunate song title of 2007. styles, how are you gonna have a song titled “the hardest” and feature another guy on it? if this track wasn’t so sick, i’d have to clown.
blu & exile - cold hearted
as far as my favorite discovery for 2007, it’s a toss-up between blu & exile and panacea. i’m leaning towards panacea right now, but this duo is not to be slept on. it truly was difficult to select just one song from blu & exile’s record to include in my mix.
cunninlynguists - wonderful ft. devin the dude
i’m a fan of ending mixtapes with a dreamy sounding track. when they’re not trying to be overtly political, the cunninlynguists own that type of sound. plus, devin the dude adds a thc haze to everything he touches, don’t you think?
******
favorite lyric in the mix:
gettin tired of the drama, boss man said he would fire me
i told him i would gladly do the honors, so I just quit,
cause this work shit got my dreams on pause like a comma.
but I’m still six-figure fiendin’, bull city leanin,
california dreamin’ - like the papas and the mamas.
the stress is toxic but thank god a nigga got direct deposit.
so I’m a take this check and pay my rent up
cause this weekend I’m goin out like a soldier.
put a little somethin down on the light bill,
let the cable and the phone bill roll over.
as for the rest of my hard earned funds
i take a hundred dollars, put it all in ones…

hah, yeah doom and a bunch of other people are supposed to be playing the safehouse in l.a. on NYE. washington ave, i believe. very much a nerd rap line-up (which is how i roll). i kinda wish someone would buy me tix to l.a. for new years - that way i could go to the show and spend one last weekend living like a rock star.
