don’t stop believing? (youtube)
seriously. the finale of the sopranos was depressingly awful. i can’t believe that a show that brilliant ends with a journey song and an abrupt cut. yes, people are going to be talking about it, but the idea wasn’t worthwhile. ending that tension-filled scene so anti-climactically? there must have been millions of people around the world who thought something was wrong with their television sets.
it seems like one of those ideas that gets thrown around in a writer’s room. some crackpot spitballs the idea of ending the show inexplicably. a few other hacks even entertain the thought of actually using the idea…but then reality sets in. nobody actually follows through with that idea, and there’s a reason they don’t: it makes for bad storytelling.
my head hurts.

It was an incredibly disappointing ending thats for sure.
The only thing I can think of is that it was supposed to symbolize that for everything that happened, everyone that died, and the inevitability of trial that it really is “just another day” and that Tony is still hoping that somehow in spite of everything he will leave this world loved, remembered fondly.
Mama Kelly
And I can’t believe that a site called “consumption addict” doesn’t appreciate that The Sopranos ended with the family doing what it does best: CONSUMING.
supposedly, there is all this significance to the characters that were in the diner at the end. i don’t know. i’m neither patient nor nerdy enough to find out….
mama kelly, i totally agree. while it may have been more realistic to portray life as just “going on” this show was, after all, a narrative story about a family. the more i think about it, the more i can pinpoint signs that the series would end this way.
atwater village – nice catch. i am duly shamed to have not given a nod to the metaphorical and literal consumption going on in the final scene of the sopranos. still, that doesn’t mean i like the ending…
pemora…you absolutely ARE nerdy enough to find out. who are you kidding?
